The Jesuitical Missions established on the grounds of the Chiquitanía constitute a valuable historical legacy. They are the only Jesuitical Missions in South America that remain alive for three centuries as one of the most impressive testimonies of the history of humanity which keep their temples ever since (1691 -1760).
They are located in the Northeast side of Bolivia , a little over 200 km from the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra , capital of the Department of Santa Cruz.
The richness of the baroque music, composed and played in the missions, make a unique collection in America , giving birth to the international Biennale Festival of Renaissance and Baroque Music “Misiones de Chiquitos” which is held in the City of Santa Cruz and in the mission towns.
These living missions have deserved the international recognition by being declared by UNESCO as a “Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. Six of the ten Chiquitanean town preserves the temples of that time: San Xavier, Concepción, Santa Ana , San Rafael , San Miguel and San José de Chiquitos.
